About Seaidx
Seaidx is an experimental coastal-traveler companion that fuses tide prediction, satellite ocean color, and meteorology into a single, easy-to-read Ocean Viewing Index (OVI).
Data Sources
- Tides: TPXO 9.1 ocean tide model via NOAA, with harmonic constituents refined per location.
- Ocean color: MODIS Aqua & Sentinel-3 OLCI surface reflectance, processed to chlorophyll-a and turbidity.
- Weather: Open-Meteo Marine API for sea state, wind and lighting.
- Astronomy: Moon phase and sunrise/sunset from standard JPL ephemerides.
OVI Algorithm
The Ocean Viewing Index is a weighted 0–100 score combining six sub-indices:
- • Color (hue saturation)
- • Clarity (inverse turbidity)
- • Visibility (horizontal range)
- • Sea State (wave height / Beaufort)
- • Lighting (sun angle & cloud cover)
- • Water Quality (chlorophyll & pollution markers)
Rating tiers: 80+ Excellent (green), 65+ Good (blue), 50+ Fair (yellow), 35+ Poor (orange), below 35 Bad (red).
Founded by Citron Chan. Seaidx is part of the VoyBird travel platform.
